Osteopathic Treatment Cases

Below are detailed two cases from our clinic which demonstrate the range and possible significance of the treatment.

Baby Grace

Baby Grace, aged just three weeks, presented with mum, who reported that she was not feeding well, and was clamping onto the nipple during breast feeding. She was also not sleeping very soundly, and was a little colicy.

Obviously taking a three week old baby’s case history is not likely to take too long, but it did reveal that the baby’s head had been engaged for quite a long time before she emerged in quite a rush.

Gentle palpation of the head revealed that Grace was quite compressed at the top of her nose from the pressure on her face when her head was engaged. Her breathing was sharp and shallow and her diaphragm was very tense. Each area was affecting the other; the nasal compression was affecting the sinuses and palate, which were in turn compromising breathing and swallowing. The shallow breathing was a result of both this and the diaphragm tension.

Two treatments were given and Grace responded very well. Once the breathing was settled and the forehead area relaxed, she was feeding well and sleeping for a lot longer between feeds.

Mrs G

Mrs G. was 52 years old when she first came for treatment. Sick of being told nothing could be done for arthritis, she took a neighbour’s recommendation to see and osteopath.

The pains in the lumbar spine, pelvis and hips were so bad that Mrs G. occasionally collapsed and needed help. She found this embarrassing, and as a result hardly went out. Her GP had prescribed the strongest painkillers possible but life was still very difficult.

Osteopathic treatment was aimed at loosening the muscle spasms which were causing a lot of pain, and giving anti-inflammatory advice and gentle exercises to do at home. No joint-manipulation was warranted in this case, but a lot of joint stretching and deep soft tissue treatment was used. This took a lot of pressure away from the inflamed worn joints, and helped them to move within a pain free range.

Mrs G was never going to be “cured” of her arthritis, but she now gets out of her house nearly every day, and has taken on a part time job. She still attends for treatment every few weeks and she has found that this successfully keeps her symptoms at bay and has stopped the steady deterioration that which she had been experiencing.
