Cranial Osteopathic Treatment

Cranial osteopathy is a refined, subtle technique which uses a very light touch. This is usually applied around the skull or at the sacrum at the base of the spine.

It is particularly suitable for babies and children, with typical problems treated including colic, inexplicable crying, and glue ear. Birth is a very traumatic experience, involving compression of the soft boned head as it is pushed and squeezed into the outside world.

Babies are often born with slightly miss-shaped heads, but the system gradually rights itself as the infant cries yawns and suckles. Problems can arise which causes some areas of compression which can lead to discomfort and dysfunction – these problems can arise from a difficult birth and trauma.

Often the crying as a baby, poor sleeping as an infant, and glue ear later on could be accepted as conditions to be “expected”. It may only be on consulting an osteopath with headaches and digestive problems as a adult, that a full case history reveals the potential links which may be the root cause of your symptoms.

The skull is not a fused single bone but a structure made up of some 20 bones which meet at sutures and are surrounded by membranes, nerves and blood vessels. It is very much a living, breathing structure and there is a very small but rhythmic movement around all the junctions.

Osteopaths assess the system and identify which may be compressed or congested, which could compromise the normal rhythmic motion. Treatment is extremely gentle and is aimed at balancing the movement and reducing the stresses throughout the system so promoting natural drainage and better overall health.

Everything from concentration levels to the integrity of the immune system can be influenced.
